A Russian couple scaled the Empire State Building’s spire in New York City on Wednesday to display a large banner promoting world peace, an act that ended with their arrest. Angela Nikolau and Vanya Beerkus climbed approximately 443 meters above midtown Manhattan to unfurl the sign, which read, "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace," in white capital letters against a black background.

Dressed in black sleeveless attire, the pair documented their ascent on social media as they reached the top of the landmark’s antenna. Shortly after 12:30 p.m., they were observed on aerial video footage descending to a lower platform on the spire’s structure. There, Beerkus knelt and proposed to Nikolau, who responded with an embrace and kiss. Wearing her signature Catwoman-style headgear, Nikolau was later seen photographing her ring to share online. The couple’s rooftop exploits are featured in the 2024 Netflix documentary *Skywalkers: A Love Story*.

The New York Police Department temporarily closed streets surrounding the building and took the couple into custody without incident. Officials identified them as Angelina Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32. They face multiple charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal tampering, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct. Authorities have not disclosed how the climbers accessed the secured antenna area. Security measures at New York landmarks, including the Empire State Building, have been increased since the 2001 World Trade Center attacks.

Nikolau’s father, Dmitriy Nikolau, a Russian circus performer, expressed no concern about his daughter’s actions. Speaking by phone, he said, “I think it is normal to climb up a roof in any country, including the United States, according to any constitution.” When asked about her arrest, he responded, “Why should I be worried? I climb up roofs myself.”

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in securing iconic urban landmarks against unauthorized access, particularly by individuals seeking to use daring stunts to convey messages or personal milestones. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the couple’s ascent.
