On Sunday in Geneva, clashes erupted between riot police and protesters during a demonstration against the G7 group of wealthy nations, a day before the summit of world leaders begins in nearby France. Authorities deployed tear gas and water cannons in response to youths who threw stones along the protest route.

The march attracted an estimated 20,000 participants, including roughly 600 militants associated with the so-called “Black Bloc” tactic, according to Geneva police spokesman Alexandre Brahier. While the overall demonstration was largely peaceful, the day saw violent incidents such as a car being set on fire and the smashing of bank windows.

The protest was organized by a coalition of activist groups following weeks of negotiations with local authorities. Participants included environmentalists, advocates for women’s rights, supporters of Palestinians, as well as protesters opposing imperialism, fascism, and capitalism.

The G7 summit, which features leaders including US President Donald Trump, is scheduled to take place in France, drawing global attention and prompting demonstrations in neighboring cities such as Geneva. Officials in Geneva maintained a strong security presence to manage the protest and limit disruptions.
