Six protesters were detained outside Albania’s Parliament on Monday during demonstrations opposing the construction of a luxury hotel associated with the family of U.S. President Donald Trump. The hotel project, backed by Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, is planned for a nature reserve in Zvërnec, located on Albania’s southwestern coast.

Since late May, local activists have staged protests against the development, which they say threatens protected natural areas. On Monday, dozens gathered near Parliament to call for the repeal of legislation permitting the construction of luxury hotels within protected environmental zones.

Eyewitnesses reported that protesters threw eggs at the cars of Members of Parliament and attempted to break through police barriers set up to shield the vehicles. Police responded by detaining six individuals involved in the disruptive acts. All six were released later the same day.

Endri Shabani, an Albanian human rights defender, announced in a television interview that he had initiated an investigation into the conduct of the police during the incident. The protests reflect ongoing tensions between environmental preservation efforts and development interests in Albania, especially regarding projects linked to prominent international figures.
