Former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro appeared in a Manhattan court on Thursday morning, an event that sparked demonstrations outside the courthouse involving both his supporters and opponents. The two groups were separated into designated pens set up near the building.
A small contingent of demonstrators gathered briefly to express support for Maduro ahead of his court appearance. These individuals displayed signs calling to "Free President Nicolás Maduro & Cilia Flores!" and proclaiming "Long Live the Bolivarian Revolution!" Their chants included "Free Maduro," "Free Palestine," and "Free Iran." According to law enforcement sources, many of the individuals in the pro-Maduro group were recognized participants in various leftist-oriented protests. Visible among this group were representatives from several organizations, including the Freedom Road Socialist Organization, the Struggle for Socialism Party, the Workers World Party, and the Peoples Power Assembly, identified by their signs and T-shirts. This group reportedly dispersed before the court hearing began.
Conversely, another group of protesters convened to advocate for justice in connection with Maduro's period in power. Many individuals in this anti-Maduro contingent were Venezuelan-born. Some expressed a sense of relief regarding the end of Maduro's administration, citing the impact on family members still residing in their native country. The demonstration highlighted the divided sentiments surrounding the former leader's presence in the city.
