Protests broke out in the occupied West Bank on Monday following the deaths of two Palestinian teenagers shot in the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the victims were males aged 15 and 19. Two additional youths were reported injured in the incident, which took place Sunday evening.
The Israeli military stated its troops responded to Palestinians throwing Molotov cocktails and setting tires on fire near an Israeli settlement in the vicinity. The military confirmed that two individuals were "eliminated" and two others were "incapacitated" during the confrontation. In response to the fatalities, a general strike was observed in Beit Ummar on Monday.
The latest violence in the West Bank occurs amid a broader escalation since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023. Israeli forces have intensified operations targeting Palestinian militants, while Palestinian authorities report that more than 1,000 Palestinians have died in these confrontations over the past two and a half years. Israeli settlers have also increasingly engaged in attacks against Palestinian communities, contributing to the volatile environment.
Meanwhile, in Gaza City on Monday, a Palestinian schoolgirl was killed and several others wounded in an Israeli airstrike on a vehicle, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA. The Israeli military said the strike targeted a vehicle carrying a member of Hamas’ military wing. While four missiles were reportedly launched, eyewitnesses noted that the occupants escaped the attack. The military expressed regret over civilian casualties and stated that all feasible precautions were taken to avoid harming bystanders.
The Palestinian Ministry of Education mourned the death of the high school student, highlighting that students have frequently been victims in recent Israeli military actions. An image circulated by WAFA showed a severely damaged car surrounded by onlookers at the strike site.
The incidents in Beit Ummar and Gaza underscore the ongoing tensions and violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with both sides reporting casualties and attributing blame to the other amid an increasingly fraught security situation.
