Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique has emphasized his commitment to the club’s immediate objectives, expressing no intention of adjusting his management approach in light of the upcoming World Cup. Speaking ahead of PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Angers on Sunday, Enrique made clear that his focus remains firmly on the team’s ongoing domestic and European campaigns.
PSG currently lead Ligue 1 and are preparing for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich next week. Despite a season affected by a string of injuries, Enrique insists the squad will be managed with the club’s ambitions as the primary concern. “I’m the Paris Saint-Germain coach, as for the rest, I couldn’t care less,” said the 55-year-old Spaniard when asked about managing players with the World Cup in mind. Enrique, who led Spain during the 2022 World Cup, added, “I’m not interested in that. What I have to manage is the situation at Paris Saint-Germain. Everything else is very clear.”
PSG’s recent schedule has been demanding. The team reached the Club World Cup final in the summer, which shortened the players’ off-season rest, contributing to a congested fixture list over the past 18 months to two years. This intense schedule has challenged squad fitness and availability, compounding the club’s injury woes.
In Sunday’s unexpected 2-1 home loss to Lyon, Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz made his return to competitive action after three months sidelined by injury, coming off the bench. However, Portuguese playmaker Vitinha remains unavailable for the trip to Angers due to a swollen heel sustained during the Lyon fixture. Enrique noted that Vitinha’s condition is improving, but the player continues to train separately as he recovers.
On a more positive note, left-back Nuno Mendes has overcome a recent thigh issue and is included in the squad traveling for the league match, offering a boost to Enrique’s selection options. The PSG coach’s stance underscores a determined effort to maintain momentum across all competitions as the team pursues both domestic league success and European glory.
