A British woman who managed a pub in Kent was fatally shot during a visit to Trinidad and Tobago in early July. Elaine McGowan, 65, the landlady of the Castle Hotel in Saltwood near Hythe, was killed on July 5 in the community of Trincity. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. outside the home of McGowan’s godfather while she was there with her husband, Ian.
According to reports, a silver Nissan Tiida pulled up beside the couple before gunshots were fired. The vehicle then fled the scene. McGowan was transported to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police have not determined a motive for the shooting and have made no arrests.
McGowan and her husband had been in Trinidad and Tobago on what was described as a business trip to her father’s farm, Cocal Retreat, located in Manzanilla. She was remembered by family members and acquaintances as a “brilliant, helpful and lovely lady.” Her sister, Joanne Butcher, urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the close-knit family ties rooted in their Caribbean heritage.
In a social media statement, Butcher reflected on their upbringing in south London in the 1960s, noting their parents’ immigration from Trinidad and Tobago and the importance placed on family and community. “We spent every weekend and every holiday together and I learned at an early age how important family is in good times and in bad,” she said.
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed it was supporting McGowan’s family and liaising with local authorities in Trinidad and Tobago.
Elaine McGowan had managed the Castle Hotel since 2019, serving the village of Saltwood, which has a population of around 850. Hemang Patel, who worked at a local shop and had known McGowan since she took over the pub, described the news of her death as “shocking.” He added that McGowan was well regarded in the village and frequently supported neighboring businesses.
The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to seek information related to the fatal shooting.
