Zoo Melaka in Malaysia has welcomed a new addition to its animal family in the form of a male black panther cub and is inviting the public to help name him. The cub, born on July 22 through natural breeding, is the offspring of a six-year-old female named Beting and an 11-year-old male called Tommy.
At birth, the cub weighed 1.09 kilograms and has since developed into a healthy and active youngster. As of early September, the cub was two months and seven days old and was frequently seen spending time under the careful supervision of his mother, the zoo said in a post on its official Facebook page.
To engage the community, Zoo Melaka launched a public call for name suggestions, sparking interest on social media. Suggestions from the public have included names inspired by local culture and popular references, such as T’chaka, Taming Sari, Wakanda, Bintang, Kasturi, and Arang. Some commenters expressed excitement about the cub’s appearance, while others proposed creative names like “Taming,” combining elements from the names of the cub’s parents.
The cub’s striking features include blue-grey eyes, rounded ears, and a dark coat as he explores his surroundings. It is important to note that a black panther is not a distinct species but rather a leopard exhibiting a genetic trait called melanism. This condition darkens the animal’s coat almost entirely black, although the leopard’s characteristic spots remain visible under close inspection. In Asia, black panthers are melanistic leopards, whereas in the Americas, the term can also refer to melanistic jaguars.
Zoo Melaka’s initiative reflects ongoing efforts by wildlife institutions to raise awareness and foster public interest in wildlife conservation through interactive campaigns. The selected name will mark the beginning of the cub’s public identity as he continues to grow under the watchful care of his parents and the zoo staff.
