The parents of Ketan Agarwal, a Pune-based realtor who died after being pushed from Lohagad Fort, have called for a fast-track trial of their son’s fiancée, Siya Goyal, and her friend, Chetan Chaudhary, both currently in police custody. The incident occurred on June 18 near Pune, a day before Siya’s birthday, when Ketan, 26, was reportedly pushed down a steep slope, resulting in his immediate death.
The Pune rural police have confirmed that both Siya, 20, and Chetan, 22, confessed to their involvement in the killing. According to authorities, CCTV footage shows Chetan following the couple while wearing a hoodie to conceal his identity. Police investigators believe the pair struck Ketan at the fort’s edge before pushing him off the cliff. Officials noted that Ketan, an experienced trekker familiar with the area, was unlikely to have fallen accidentally.
S.P. Singh, a senior Pune police officer, said phone records reveal the two had communicated extensively, exchanging more than 2,000 calls over six months. Investigations revealed that Siya was reluctant to proceed with the arranged marriage to Ketan and viewed him as an impediment to her relationship with Chetan.
Vishal Agarwal, Ketan’s father, addressed reporters after a Pune court extended Siya and Chetan’s police custody until June 29. He stated that Siya could have refused to marry, which would have led to the cancellation of the wedding without incident. Vishal also revealed a longstanding acquaintance with Siya’s family, spanning 35 years. He said Ketan and Siya had been engaged since February, with a wedding planned for November at a palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The event was expected to be lavish, with guests flown in via private planes.
Relatives close to Ketan have further accused some members of Siya’s family of pushing for the marriage to proceed despite knowing about Siya’s prolonged affair with Chetan. Ketan had recently returned to Pune in 2023 after completing his master’s degree in the United States and had joined the family business.
The police continue to investigate the case, while family members await speedy legal proceedings against the accused.
