PureGym, the UK’s largest gym and fitness operator, announced plans to accelerate its global expansion and enhance women’s workout spaces following a strong first-half financial performance. For the six months ending June 30, the company reported adjusted earnings before deductions of £123.6 million, a 23 percent increase compared to £100.4 million in the same period last year.
The Leeds-based group, which ranks as the second largest gym operator in Europe, currently manages more than 700 sites and serves over 2.4 million members worldwide. It stated it remains on course to open approximately 60 new gyms in 2026. So far this year, PureGym has launched 17 gyms, 15 of which are located in the UK, bringing its total network to 728 gyms globally. This includes 467 gyms in the UK alone. The company aims to expand this footprint to more than 750 locations over the coming years.
An area of particular focus for PureGym is the enlargement of dedicated workout spaces for women. Having introduced these spaces previously, the company cited a “positive reception” from members, which has prompted an accelerated rollout. These women-only areas are designed to improve comfort and confidence for female gym-goers.
PureGym also reported a 6 percent rise in first-half revenues to £393 million and a 3 percent increase in membership compared to last year, reaching 2.44 million.
Alex Wood, PureGym’s recently appointed chief executive, highlighted the continued appeal of the fitness sector’s fundamentals. He emphasized the company's commitment to opening “high-quality” gyms both in the current year and beyond, noting significant growth potential in existing markets as well as in the Republic of Ireland. The company believes there are more than 750 suitable sites available for future development.
Founded in 2008, PureGym has expanded internationally and is the leading gym operator in Denmark, where it had 128 gyms as of December 2025. In late 2024, the group acquired the Blink fitness chain, which added 60 gyms primarily in the New York and New Jersey areas of the United States.
With its plans to scale up operations and enhance inclusivity options, PureGym aims to maintain its position as a major player in the global fitness industry.
