Oman’s Ministry of Social Development will launch the Purple Saturday initiative on July 25, aiming to promote inclusion and empowerment for persons with disabilities. This marks the fourth annual observance of the initiative under the theme “A Day with a Lasting Impact,” which is held on the last Saturday of July each year.
Purple Saturday is part of a broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) effort to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities and improve their integration into society. The initiative encourages public and private sector institutions, including commercial, service, and tourism organizations, to adopt more inclusive practices and provide services tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, facilitating a smoother and more comfortable experience.
Originally launched in 2021, the initiative reinforces the GCC’s commitment to promoting justice, equal opportunity, and a higher quality of life for persons with disabilities. It supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which emphasizes building an inclusive society that guarantees equal opportunities and enhances the rights of individuals with disabilities. The initiative seeks to improve service quality, develop accessible environments, and uphold values of respect and equality, aligning with sustainable development goals.
Adnan bin Mustafa al Farsi, acting Director-General of the Directorate-General of Communication and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, said the program aims to increase community awareness about the importance of inclusive and disability-friendly environments. He noted the role of institutions in adopting accessibility measures and highlighted the private sector as a vital partner in advancing sustainable social development and fostering a culture of inclusiveness.
Al Farsi also emphasized that Purple Saturday serves as a platform to strengthen collaboration among government bodies, private sector entities, and civil society organizations. This cooperation is intended to expand the range of services and initiatives available to persons with disabilities and promote their full participation in social and economic activities.
The initiative’s symbolic use of the color purple reflects its global association with persons with disabilities, representing respect, dignity, appreciation, and solidarity. It aims to spread a message encouraging all segments of society to contribute to creating a more inclusive and responsive environment for individuals with disabilities.
