A pursuit involving a stolen Tesla in San Diego on Monday afternoon ended with a pedestrian injured and the suspect detained by bystanders, according to police and witnesses.

San Diego police responded shortly after 12:15 p.m. to reports of a stolen Tesla. Officers located the vehicle near Mission Boulevard around 12:31 p.m. The driver, identified as 39-year-old Juan Gonzaba, allegedly refused to stop and led law enforcement on a chase through the area, according to a department statement.

During the pursuit, Gonzaba reportedly collided with an electrical transformer before driving onto the boardwalk from Pacific Beach Drive. Authorities said the Tesla was operating at high speeds as it navigated near pedestrians. One individual was struck and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, requiring hospitalization.

After the collision, Gonzaba exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by nearby pedestrians before officers arrived. Police arrested him on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, causing bodily injury, hit-and-run involving injury, vehicle theft, and felony evading a peace officer with disregard for safety.

A witness at the scene, Alex Srour, recounted observing the Tesla speeding along the boardwalk and narrowly missing pedestrians. Srour said he heard someone yell to “Watch out” before the vehicle struck his bike. After Gonzaba exited the car, Srour pursued and tackled him, holding him until police arrived. Srour also recorded video of the suspect attempting to flee on his phone.

Footage released showed a blue Tesla moving rapidly on the boardwalk, with pedestrians narrowly avoiding the car. In one moment captured on video, a woman can be seen jumping over a railing to evade the vehicle. After Gonzaba was subdued, the videos show him on the ground wearing a shirt with the phrase “F— around and find out.”

Authorities continue to investigate the incident, which disrupted the busy Pacific Beach boardwalk during the early afternoon hours.
