Russia has issued a strongly worded warning to the United Kingdom over its continued support for Ukraine, including the provision of advanced weaponry, suggesting that British military targets could face direct strikes as retaliation. The warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a news briefing in Moscow on August 27, marked a shift as it was addressed directly to the UK population rather than solely to government officials.
Zakharova urged the British public to reconsider the UK government's "hostile" stance on the conflict in Ukraine, cautioning of "inevitable catastrophic consequences" if the country maintained its current policy. She specifically cited Britain’s supply of Storm Shadow cruise missiles and the recent decision to license Ukraine to produce its own versions of these long-range weapons as particularly provocative. Zakharova characterized the use of these Franco-British missiles by Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia or Russian-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine as acts of "terrorism," thereby implicating Britain in Moscow’s view.
In addition to targeting British assets within Ukraine and in surrounding regions, Zakharova indicated that French and German military targets could also be at risk, given their involvement in supplying missile technology to Kyiv. She urged Western governments to reconsider their support to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
