US President Donald Trump indicated on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is interested in negotiating an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Speaking to journalists ahead of the Republican Party convention in Dallas, Trump described a recent telephone conversation with Putin as “good” and suggested the possibility of a trilateral meeting involving himself, Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump stated that such a meeting “could happen” if Zelensky is willing to engage in negotiations, adding that a deal to end the war “would be very nice.” The comments come shortly after US mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow and Kiev over the weekend to initiate talks, though no significant progress toward resolving the conflict has been reported.

According to the Kremlin, Putin reassured Trump during their call that Russia holds no “aggressive plans” toward Europe. Putin also reportedly provided an “objective and detailed analysis” of the situation on the battlefield, according to his foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov. The remarks reflect ongoing diplomatic efforts amidst a protracted conflict that has drawn international attention but remains unresolved.
