Russian forces launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on Ukraine on Monday, resulting in at least 20 fatalities and significant damage in Kyiv and surrounding areas. The attack involved the firing of dozens of ballistic missiles and hundreds of attack drones, overwhelming Ukraine’s air defenses and exposing a critical shortage of interceptor missiles.
According to Ukrainian officials, Russia targeted Kyiv with 23 ballistic missiles, none of which were intercepted due to depleted stocks of US-made Patriot missiles, the only weapons capable of effectively countering such projectiles. In total, the assault reportedly included up to 68 missiles and 351 drones. Despite Ukraine’s efforts to shoot down a majority of the drones and some cruise missiles, ballistic missiles penetrated defenses and caused extensive destruction. Measures to search for survivors continued into the afternoon after several residential high-rise buildings were struck, resulting in dozens of injuries and structural collapses.
The attack occurred on the eve of a NATO summit in Turkey, where President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump amid ongoing calls for increased Western military support for Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for additional Patriot interceptor missiles, describing it as imperative to protect civilian populations from further ballistic missile strikes. He stated that as long as these missiles remain idle in allies’ stockpiles, Russian forces are encouraged to continue targeting residential buildings.
Emergency responders recovered the bodies of victims from the rubble, including an entire family, while survivors awaited news about missing relatives. The human cost of the strikes has been significant, with casualties reported in Kyiv and the broader region. Ukrainian authorities reported at least 14 deaths in the capital and six in surrounding areas, alongside numerous injuries.
Russia’s defense ministry characterized the operation as a “massive” attack using long-range, precision-guided weapons launched from air, land, and sea. Moscow maintained that its strikes targeted weapons factories, though Ukrainian officials and independent observers have repeatedly noted the frequent targeting of civilian infrastructure, which has contributed to a high civilian death toll since the conflict began.
The timing of the bombardment also coincided with retaliatory Ukrainian strikes on Russian facilities, including a recent successful attack on an oil refinery in Siberia, which has heightened pressure on Russia amid ongoing fuel shortages.
As the NATO summit approaches, the situation underscores Ukraine’s increasing vulnerability to Russian missile attacks and the pressing need for enhanced air defense capabilities. Zelensky has called on NATO members and the United States to take decisive action to shore up Ukraine’s defenses and prevent further loss of life in residential areas.
