Qantas has undertaken extensive logistical preparations to accommodate two National Football League (NFL) teams flying to Australia for this week’s season opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The airline operated long-haul charter flights transporting the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams from the United States to Melbourne, each covering approximately 12,900 kilometers.

On the latest flight, QF338, the Los Angeles Rams arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday morning, following the 49ers’ earlier journey, which was noted as the longest flight in NFL history. Each charter carried around 200 passengers, including 53 players per team, along with family members, support staff, and club officials. The flights were staffed by four pilots, 22 cabin crew members, and a dedicated charter manager.

The operation involved significant logistical challenges, with more than 20 tonnes of team equipment loaded on board and approximately 2,000 meals prepared for the journey. To meet the players’ specific requirements, the airline collaborated closely with team nutritionists throughout nine months of planning to address concerns related to nutrition, hydration, and sleep during the nearly 16-hour flights.

Evan Kassel, Qantas’s manager of charter planning and delivery, emphasized the focus on tailoring meal and rest schedules to the athletes’ needs. Customized menus included high-protein options, electrolyte drinks, and sleep-promoting beverages. The airline also stocked additional snacks in overhead lockers to ensure players had access to food throughout the flight. On-demand offerings such as cheeseburgers, steak sandwiches with extra meat, and Gatorade were served, complementing the business class-style service extended across all cabins.

While Qantas generally keeps details of special charter flights confidential, they were granted permission by the NFL to disclose the operational efforts behind hosting the teams. This collaboration highlights the complexity of managing elite sporting teams’ international travel, where maintaining performance readiness involves precise attention to nutrition, rest, and overall well-being during transit. The Rams and 49ers will compete in the NFL's season opener at the MCG, marking a significant event in the league’s international expansion efforts.
