Qatar has emphasized the critical role of digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) in driving economic and social development, underscoring their capacity to enhance public services, increase productivity, aid decision-making, and advance sustainable development goals. The remarks were made by Sheikh Khalid Abdulaziz al-Thani, a member of Qatar’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly’s Second Committee, during discussions on information and communication technologies (ICT) for sustainable development at the UN headquarters in New York.
Sheikh Khalid outlined Qatar’s strategic approach to digital advancement, anchored in the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the country’s Digital Agenda 2030. These frameworks seek to develop secure and sustainable digital infrastructure, support economic diversification, and promote inclusive access to digital technologies.
The official highlighted Qatar’s ongoing implementation of its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, which aims to foster scientific research, build national capabilities, and support the integration of AI across diverse sectors. Key initiatives cited include the GOV AI program and the TASMUM SCAT Qatar initiative, which are designed to accelerate digital transformation and enhance the quality of public services.
Further detailing Qatar’s investments, Sheikh Khalid pointed to significant developments in digital infrastructure, including the expansion of fibre-optic networks, construction of data centers, and the adoption of cloud computing technologies. These efforts are intended to create a robust foundation for expanding AI applications throughout the country. He also referenced the forthcoming launch of Qai, Qatar’s national AI company, scheduled for December 2025. Qai is expected to drive investments in advanced AI systems and infrastructure, supporting digital innovation in both public and private sectors.
Sheikh Khalid also stressed the global dimension of digital transformation, emphasizing its potential to reduce development disparities between countries. He called for enhanced international cooperation in technology transfer, capacity building, development of digital infrastructure, and ensuring affordable and secure access to technology. Such collaboration, he said, is essential for leveraging technology to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Additionally, the Qatari official noted the country’s active engagement in international AI governance discussions, including participation in the inaugural UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance held in Geneva in July 2026. Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with global stakeholders to responsibly harness technology and innovation in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
