Qatar Airways has announced plans to commence direct flights connecting Hamad International Airport in Doha with Western Sydney International Airport, starting December 15, 2027. This new service will mark Qatar Airways’ seventh destination in Australia, joining its existing routes to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra.

The airline will operate three weekly flights initially, utilizing Boeing 777-300ER aircraft configured with 42 Business Class seats and 312 Economy Class seats. Passengers on these flights will have access to complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi. Qatar Airways has indicated intentions to increase the frequency to daily services by late 2028.

Western Sydney Airport, which officially opens shortly before the flights begin, benefits from a curfew-free status, allowing nighttime arrivals such as the 11:45 p.m. touchdown of Qatar Airways flights. Return journeys are scheduled to depart at 4:10 p.m. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Simon Hickey described Qatar Airways as a “premium carrier” that will enhance connectivity for the region, linking passengers to more than 170 global destinations via Doha.

The development is supported by the $16 million Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, which contributed to securing Qatar Airways' commitment. This aligns with recent expansions in bilateral air rights granted to Qatar Airways for services to Badgerys Creek. Federal Transport Minister Catherine King welcomed the announcement, highlighting the strategic importance of the connection, which offers Western Sydney travelers improved access to international destinations through Doha, one of the busiest airports in the world.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Hamad Al Khater emphasized that Western Sydney International’s 24-hour operations create new opportunities to bring international visitors to New South Wales. He also noted the potential for increased trade, with direct cargo routes linking Australian exporters to markets in the Gulf region and beyond. The airline’s alliance with Virgin Australia is expected to support further network development in Australia, although Virgin Australia has yet to confirm plans for Western Sydney routes.

The introduction of Qatar Airways adds to a growing list of international carriers committed to Western Sydney International. Air New Zealand commenced daily flights to Auckland ahead of the airport’s opening, while Singapore Airlines, Vietjet, and Fiji Airways have announced routes scheduled to start over the coming months. Domestic carriers Jetstar, QantasLink, and Virgin Australia are also preparing to operate from the airport, with Jetstar seeking approval for a Bali route.

Western Sydney Airport recently unveiled plans for its first international lounge, an airline-independent facility expected to initially serve Singapore Airlines passengers. Industry observers suggest such a lounge will accommodate travelers during the airport's early years until individual carriers establish their own dedicated facilities.

Tickets for the new Qatar Airways flights will go on sale starting December 19, 2026, as Western Sydney International prepares to position itself as a major hub providing expansive international connectivity.
