Qatar earned promotion to the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group III after a 2-1 victory over Kyrgyzstan in the Group IV semi-finals held in Colombo on Saturday. The win was secured through a critical doubles match, following a tightly contested series of singles rubbers.

Mubarak Shannan Al Harrasi opened the tie strongly for Qatar by defeating Kirill Kistanov in three sets. After dropping the first set 3-6, Mubarak rallied to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-2, giving Qatar an early lead. Kyrgyzstan responded in the second singles match when Mirgiyaz Mirdjaliev beat Moussa Shanan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, leveling the score and setting the stage for a decisive doubles encounter.

The Shanan brothers, Mubarak and Moussa, then combined in the doubles match to secure the overall victory. Despite losing the first set 4-6 to the Kyrgyz pairing of Kistanov and Mirdjaliev, the Qatari duo recovered to win the subsequent sets 6-3, 6-2. Their performance sealed Qatar’s return to Group III and marked the culmination of a successful campaign in Group IV.

Qatar’s promotion reflects a strong team effort, with pivotal contributions from the Shanan brothers throughout the tie. The win ensures the team will compete at a higher level in the Asia-Oceania zone in next year’s Davis Cup competition.
