Qatar Charity has announced an urgent humanitarian response to aid those affected by severe floods that struck Nepal on August 26. The organization has mobilized its Emergency Response Cell within the Humanitarian Operations Department and continues to monitor the situation closely through its Crisis and Information Centre.

Following the floods, which were characterized by heavy rainfall and challenging mountainous terrain, Qatar Charity has been maintaining continuous communication with its field office in Nepal. This local office has coordinated with Nepalese authorities to assess urgent needs and monitor ongoing relief efforts.

According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the floods have impacted approximately 10,000 families requiring immediate assistance. The authority reported that at least 165 bodies have been recovered, while 247 people remain missing and 73 have been injured. The disaster has also caused significant damage to infrastructure, destroying 35 motorable bridges and 45 suspension bridges, along with damaging 40 kilometers of paved roads. These conditions, combined with persistent rainfall, have complicated search and rescue operations in the affected areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey described the event as a debris avalanche and flash flood likely triggered by a rapid slope failure involving a glacier. Additionally, a second seismic event was recorded roughly three hours after the initial incident, further complicating the disaster’s aftermath.

The most urgent needs identified by relief agencies and Qatar Charity include ready-to-eat hot meals, mattresses, blankets, emergency healthcare, infant formula, and temporary shelter. Qatar Charity’s response aims to address these critical necessities as part of its broader humanitarian efforts in Nepal.

Efforts by local authorities, international organizations, and humanitarian groups are ongoing as Nepal continues to grapple with the immediate relief and recovery from this disaster.
