Qatar Charity has supplied a major hospital in Mogadishu with kidney dialysis machines and medical beds to address critical shortages in Somalia’s healthcare system. The delivery, made possible through donations from supporters in Qatar, included 10 dialysis machines and 10 fully equipped medical beds provided to the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital.

Somalia’s health sector is currently grappling with a growing demand for dialysis treatment amid limited availability of necessary equipment. The high cost of care, estimated between $500 and $600 per patient per month, further restricts access to life-saving services for many families. The new equipment aims to alleviate some of these challenges by expanding treatment capacity for patients suffering from kidney failure.

Tahir Mohamed Haj, programmes director at Qatar Charity’s Somalia branch, emphasized that the initiative was a humanitarian response to the increasing number of kidney failure cases across the country. He also highlighted the need for broader international support to ensure that treatment reaches all vulnerable populations nationwide. Haj expressed gratitude to Qatari donors whose contributions enabled the procurement and delivery of the dialysis machines and beds.

Dr. Yusuf Çokay, director general of the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital, praised the donation, describing it as a “key cornerstone” for advancing the hospital’s plans to expand its kidney care services. The new equipment is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide dialysis treatment and improve health outcomes for patients in the region.

This recent support by Qatar Charity reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Somalia, where medical resources remain scarce and the burden of chronic diseases, such as kidney failure, continues to rise.
