The drone strike targeted the vicinity of Masjid Al-Haram, Islam’s holiest mosque, prompting Qatar to stress the importance of safeguarding the sanctity and security of Islamic holy sites. The statement emphasized that these locations, as well as the safety of pilgrims and visitors, must not be jeopardized or used as leverage in regional conflicts. Doha warned that attacks on Makkah or its sacred sites represent a grave escalation and demonstrate a disregard for their religious and spiritual significance.
Qatar expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, supporting measures taken by Riyadh to protect its territory, holy sites, and citizens. The ministry reiterated its firm rejection of attacks on civilians and religious locations, calling instead for respect toward these sites to prevent them from becoming casualties of ongoing regional tensions.
The Houthi movement, which controls significant areas of Yemen, denied responsibility for the attack. Nonetheless, the accusation has elicited widespread condemnation from Muslim-majority countries across the region. Last week, the Houthis announced their control over Yemen’s entire Red Sea coastline, including the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical maritime passage for Saudi oil exports. This move further complicates regional dynamics amid ongoing wider Middle East conflicts that have also disrupted the Strait of Hormuz shipping route.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the targeting of Makkah as a “cowardly terrorist attack,” reaffirming the kingdom’s right to defend the two holy mosques, pilgrims, and national territory. Reports from the city indicated that an alert was sent to residents warning of a possible attack, prompting some panic and people rushing to windows to observe. However, daily life in Makkah reportedly continued as usual following the alert.
