Qatar is intensifying its efforts to enhance food security through sustainable agricultural practices and innovation, with domestic production currently meeting nearly all of the country’s demand for fresh poultry and dairy products, according to the Ministry of Municipality. The ministry released details of these initiatives in a statement ahead of World Food Day on October 16.

As part of Qatar's National Food Security Strategy 2030, the government aims to boost local food production while conserving natural resources and minimizing environmental impact. Data shows that by 2025, domestic output is projected to cover 67% of fresh fish demand and 47% of basic vegetable needs.

To advance these goals, Qatar is implementing several measures to increase the efficiency and sustainability of its food production systems. Among these efforts is the development of 96 hectares of cooled greenhouses, with an objective of raising productivity by 30%. The ministry is also focusing on modernizing fish farming technologies, expanding the use of smart irrigation systems, promoting alternative energy sources, and enhancing biosecurity measures for plants and animals.

Furthermore, the ministry is working to improve the resilience of the country’s food supply chains. This includes digital management of strategic reserves, early-warning systems designed to identify potential supply disruptions, investment in environmentally friendly food production, and the expansion of refrigerated supply networks. Efforts to reduce food loss and waste are supported by a national program alongside digital platforms aimed at streamlining licensing and project monitoring across the sector.

Research conducted by the ministry’s Agricultural Research Department is also contributing to these initiatives. Trials involving bio-based farming techniques, such as the application of mycorrhizal fungi, demonstrated a 10% increase in plant growth and crop productivity compared to conventional methods. The use of these fungi also improved soil health and reduced dependence on chemical inputs.

The ministry emphasized that integrating biological farming with advanced methods—including protected, hydroponic, and vertical farming—could enhance resource efficiency, particularly water use, while decreasing waste. These approaches are expected to help local farms adapt to Qatar’s arid climate and evolving environmental conditions, fostering a more resilient agricultural sector.

Officials highlighted that achieving food security requires not only increasing production but also adopting responsible farming practices that safeguard natural resources to meet the needs of current and future generations.
