The Qatar National Library (QNL), in partnership with the Embassy of Colombia in Qatar, recently hosted a cultural event titled “The Sounds of Macondo – Musical Interpretations of One Hundred Years of Solitude,” celebrating the legacy of Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. The event featured Colombian artist Oriana da Marte, who presented a unique fusion of music and storytelling inspired by Márquez’s renowned novel *One Hundred Years of Solitude*.
Held at the QNL, the session aimed to offer audiences a fresh artistic interpretation of the novel’s themes, highlighting its significance within Latin American literature and its global influence. Oriana da Marte, a composer, pianist, and singer, drew on her award-winning album *Un Viaje a Macondo* to explore the novel’s central motifs such as memory, imagination, and cultural identity. Through a blend of live musical performance and literary discussion, she transported attendees to Macondo, the mythical town at the heart of Márquez’s magical realism.
The event was attended by senior officials including His Excellency Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, Minister of State and President of the Qatar National Library. Haya Abdulla al-Sheeb, senior librarian for adult programming at QNL, emphasized the value of combining literature and music as a dynamic way to engage the community with global literary heritage. She noted that the collaboration brought new perspectives on Márquez’s work while also celebrating Colombia’s rich artistic traditions.
Camilo Vizcaya, first secretary and chargé d’affaires of the Colombian Embassy in Qatar, highlighted the event’s role in strengthening cultural ties between the two countries. He pointed out that despite geographical distance, Qatar and Colombia share close relations grounded in mutual respect and a shared appreciation for creativity, heritage, and cultural exchange. Such cultural initiatives, according to Vizcaya, are vital in deepening the friendship between the nations and fostering greater understanding through the arts.
The event underscored Qatar National Library’s ongoing commitment to promoting international cultural dialogue and celebrating diverse global heritage. By hosting a session that intertwined literature and music, QNL continues to position itself as a space for cross-cultural engagement and the dissemination of world literary and artistic traditions.
