Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been suspended for five matches following a tackle that resulted in a severe injury to Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné during their recent World Cup match. The incident occurred last Thursday in Vancouver, where Canada secured a 6-0 victory over Qatar.
Madibo received a straight red card for the challenge, which the FIFA disciplinary committee classified as serious foul play. The suspension ruling was announced on Wednesday and remains subject to appeal.
The injury to Koné cast a shadow over Canada’s first World Cup win, as the midfielder suffered a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. The tackle took place in the 51st minute of the match. Koné was immediately attended to on the field and was eventually stretchered off before undergoing surgery.
Players and officials on the pitch reacted with visible concern at the severity of the injury. Madibo himself appeared distressed and offered a personal apology to Koné after the match. In a statement posted on social media, Koné expressed gratitude for the support he had received, saying he was deeply thankful for the messages and prayers.
The disciplinary action highlights FIFA’s ongoing efforts to address serious fouls and protect player safety during the tournament. Both teams have yet to comment further on the possibility of appealing the suspension.
