Qatar has reiterated its support for the peace process in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a coordination meeting held in Gaborone, Botswana, aimed at advancing the African Union (AU)-led initiative to resolve ongoing conflicts in the region.
Officials from Qatar joined representatives of the AU Panel of Facilitators and the Independent Joint Secretariat, tasked with preparing an implementation plan for the eastern DRC peace process. Qatar’s delegation included HE Dr. Ali bin Ghanem Al Hajri, Director of the African Affairs Department at its Ministry of Foreign Affairs; HE Saad bin Mubarak Al Nuaimi, Ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the AU; and HE Abdullah bin Hamad Al Nuaimi, Adviser at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Dr. Al Hajri reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in eastern DRC. He emphasized Doha’s cooperation with all stakeholders, working closely alongside the United States and the Togolese Republic—the latter acting as the AU’s mediator—to develop solutions to the conflict.
Dr. Al Hajri highlighted progress achieved under the Doha track of negotiations, noting key developments including the activation of a ceasefire monitoring and verification mechanism and ongoing collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross on a detainee exchange arrangement. He added that discussions continue on remaining protocols outlined in the Doha framework.
Describing the peace process as complex and multifaceted, Dr. Al Hajri pointed to its humanitarian, political, security, economic, and social dimensions. He stressed that durable peace would require patience, incremental advancements, and the active participation and ownership by all involved parties.
The Qatari official also underscored the AU’s central role in mediation efforts, citing its regional legitimacy and capacity to engage neighboring countries and oversee implementation efforts on the ground. He called for sustained coordination among various mediation tracks and international partners to maintain a cohesive approach in supporting the peace initiative.
Qatar reiterated its determination to collaborate with regional and international actors to promote lasting stability, emphasizing that dialogue remains the most viable pathway to resolving conflict and securing long-term peace in eastern DRC.
