The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has initiated a humanitarian program to supply essential baby formula in Gaza, aiming to address the acute nutrition shortage faced by Palestinian families in the territory. The initiative, launched this week, involves the distribution of 25,000 tins of infant formula with a total value of $426,000, targeting 10,000 infants and young children across Gaza.

Dr. Akram Nassar, head of QRCS’s Gaza representation office, detailed that the distribution started at clinics operated by the NECC Gaza in Gaza City and Deir Al Balah Governorate. The supplies include different formula types tailored to infants’ various age groups and nutritional requirements, such as SMA 1 and SMA 2 formulas for newborns and Nido 3+ for toddlers.

According to Dr. Nassar, the infant nutrition supply acts as a crucial intervention amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis intensified by a blockade that has severely constrained access to food and medical resources over the past three years. The initiative aims to support families grappling with malnutrition risks that threaten children’s health and development.

This formula distribution forms part of a broader QRCS health plan designed to assist vulnerable children in Gaza. The organization is now fundraising to implement additional child-centered health measures, including the provision of 20 incubators, medications, and medical supplies to serve up to 5,000 newborns. Further components involve specialized medical care for 300 children living with type 1 diabetes, offering insulin pens, nutritional supplements, blood glucose monitoring devices, regular medical consultations, and psychological support. Additionally, QRCS plans to support children with autoimmune disorders such as celiac disease and phenylketonuria by providing medical formulas and gluten-free flour.

The overall budget for this comprehensive child health initiative is estimated at Qatari Riyals 5,640,000 (approximately $1.5 million). QRCS is encouraging donations through its website, mobile app, donor service hotline, and collection points at various malls and shopping centers to finance the ongoing relief efforts.

QRCS emphasizes that these sustained interventions are vital to mitigating the escalating health and food security challenges confronting Gaza’s youngest and most vulnerable residents.
