Qatar participated in the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Consumer Protection Law and Policy, held from July 6 to 10, 2026, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The event was convened by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and brought together international experts to discuss key issues in consumer protection and market regulation.

The Qatari delegation was led by Hassan bin Sultan al-Ghanim, Assistant Undersecretary for Consumer Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The meeting focused on advancing legislation and policies aimed at strengthening consumer protection frameworks and promoting fair competition in national and international markets.

Key topics addressed included improving product safety standards, tackling challenges arising from e-commerce and digital marketplaces, and countering the circulation of harmful goods. Participants also exchanged best practices for curbing unfair commercial conduct and explored mechanisms to enhance cooperation among countries.

The session underscored the importance of coordinated international efforts in fostering competitive markets that uphold consumer rights and safeguard public interests. Qatar’s involvement reflects its commitment to aligning national consumer protection measures with global standards, particularly amid the growing complexities of digital trade and consumer transactions.
