Qatar University’s Department of Mass Communication, in collaboration with the Al Jazeera Media Institute, has successfully concluded two professional diploma programmes designed to advance specialised media education and skills development. The diplomas—the Digital Media and AI-Supported Content Creation Diploma and the Live Television Broadcasting Diploma—ran from June 28 to late July at the Al Jazeera Media Institute headquarters in Doha.
These intensive four-week programmes form part of the Al Jazeera Media Institute’s Professional Diplomas Initiative, which aims to equip media professionals with the capabilities to navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape. The training model emphasizes hands-on learning, transitioning students from theoretical frameworks to simulated newsroom environments that provide practical experience.
A total of 26 students from Qatar University’s Department of Mass Communication participated, with 12 enrolled in the Digital Media and AI-Supported Content Creation Diploma and 14 in the Live Television Broadcasting Diploma. Each programme consisted of four specialised courses and culminated in applied graduation projects, overseen by experts and trainers from the Al Jazeera Media Institute.
Qatar University highlighted the alignment of the diplomas with its ongoing efforts to strengthen clinical education and bridge academic knowledge with practical training. This initiative coincides with the university’s plans to launch new academic programmes in journalism, digital media, and strategic communication starting in Fall 2026, reflecting a strategic focus on preparing students for the demands of the media job market both in Qatar and internationally.
Dr. Fatima Al Kubaisi, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Qatar University, emphasized the importance of the partnership in offering advanced educational opportunities that meet labour market needs. She noted the value of practice-based learning in equipping students with real-world skills and expressed confidence that the programme would serve as a significant milestone in participants’ media careers amid ongoing digital transformation.
Dr. Saitah Al Adhba, associate dean for Languages and Media, underscored the success of the partnership in preparing graduates with a blend of academic expertise and applied skills in digital media, television broadcasting, and artificial intelligence. She highlighted the comprehensive training experience and the completion of applied projects as evidence of the students’ readiness for professional roles.
Eman Al Amri, director of Al Jazeera Media Institute, described the programmes as embodying a shared commitment to integrating academic knowledge with practical application. She noted that the training enabled students to develop professional competencies necessary to adapt to the fast-changing media sector, describing the collaboration as a model for combining scientific foundations with workplace preparedness.
Dr. Hossam Wehbeh, director of Media Initiatives at Al Jazeera Network, praised the students’ dedication and characterized the combined academic and professional approach as essential for cultivating a new generation of skilled media professionals.
Among the graduates, Shahd Sanqour shared that the diploma programmes provided her with substantive digital media experience, revealing new insights into the intersection of media and technology, including artificial intelligence. Another graduate, Meera Al Mohammed, expressed pride in the achievements of the cohort and appreciation for the partnership’s role in enhancing their practical readiness and fostering values such as creativity and teamwork. She called for ongoing collaboration to continue offering similar opportunities to future students.
Looking ahead, Qatar University and the Al Jazeera Media Institute intend to build on this success by expanding training avenues and pursuing further cooperation in applied research and joint projects, aiming to reinforce Qatar’s position as a regional leader in media education and training and to enhance the media’s role in societal development.
