Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs has established a new endowment fund aimed at supporting individuals living with diabetes. The initiative, launched by the ministry’s General Directorate of Endowments, seeks to generate sustainable financial resources to assist patients in covering treatment expenses, including the cost of medicines and essential medical supplies.

Hassan al-Marzouqi, director-general of the General Directorate of Endowments, described the fund as a response to a significant public health need, intended to alleviate the financial burden faced by those managing the chronic disease. He emphasized that the fund aligns with the ministry’s strategic plan for 2025 to 2030, which prioritizes the use of charitable endowments to address pressing healthcare challenges.

The newly created diabetes endowment fund is designed to produce ongoing revenue, with profits directly allocated to supporting patient care. This approach offers a sustainable mechanism for funding healthcare assistance, moving beyond one-time donations to establish a longer-term financial framework.

Officials indicated that this initiative represents part of a broader effort to expand the ministry’s healthcare endowment portfolio. By linking charitable funds to a specific medical condition with recurring needs, the ministry aims to develop similar endowment models for other chronic illnesses in the future.

The launch underscores Qatar’s commitment to leveraging institutional endowments as a means to enhance public health support and to provide targeted assistance to vulnerable patient groups within the community.
