Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo has been suspended for five matches by FIFA following a tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Canadian player Ismaël Koné during the 2026 World Cup. The incident occurred in the 51st minute of Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday, when Madibo received a straight red card for what the disciplinary committee classified as serious foul play.

Koné was injured after being tackled from behind and was subsequently taken off the field on a stretcher. He later underwent surgery for fractures to the tibia and fibula in his left leg. The injury cast a shadow over Canada’s first-ever World Cup victory, prompting an outpouring of support from fans and fellow players. Koné expressed gratitude on social media for the messages and prayers he received.

Following the match, Madibo appeared visibly upset and personally apologized to Koné. The Qatar national team has not issued any comment regarding the suspension.

FIFA’s disciplinary panel confirmed the five-game ban but noted that the decision is subject to appeal. While significant, the suspension is not the longest penalty imposed at a World Cup. Past disciplinary actions have seen Uruguay’s Luis Suarez receive a nine-match ban and a four-month suspension from all soccer-related activities for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in 2014. Similarly, Italy’s Mauro Tassotti was suspended for eight games in 1994 for an elbowing incident involving Spain’s Luis Enrique.

The episode underscores the ongoing emphasis FIFA places on player safety and discipline during the tournament as the 2026 World Cup progresses.
