Qatar’s Under-23 national football team is intensifying its preparations ahead of the upcoming Asian Games, with the squad using domestic competition to gain match experience under the guidance of head coach Jose Angel Lacunza. The team is scheduled to begin its campaign on September 15 against the Republic of Korea, followed by a match against Saudi Arabia on September 18.

The Asian Games men’s football tournament, set to take place from September 14 to October 3, will be hosted across several venues in Japan’s Chubu and Kansai regions. The competition features 15 teams, all fielding Under-23 squads, with the option to include up to three overage players. Qatar has been placed in Group D alongside the Republic of Korea, the defending champions, and Saudi Arabia. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

Coach Lacunza has emphasized the value of the Jetour League, Qatar’s domestic Second Division competition, as a crucial platform for player development. By competing against senior-level opposition, the young players are gaining essential experience that enhances their readiness for the continental tournament. Lacunza highlighted that regular match play benefits both the players and coaching staff by helping to assess and refine the team ahead of the Asian Games.

Qatar’s focus remains on building rhythm and cohesion within the squad in the lead-up to their group stage matches, with the domestic league providing continuity in preparation. The team aims to leverage these opportunities to secure a strong start in the tournament and advance beyond the group phase.
