Qatar Charity (QC) has initiated a specialised medical convoy focused on eye surgery in Mauritania as part of its broader efforts to support underserved populations globally. The project, funded by Qatari donors and coordinated in partnership with Mauritania’s National Program for Blindness Control, aims to deliver comprehensive eye care services in the regions of Moudjeria, El Ghaire, and Legrane.
The convoy’s services include medical consultations, eye examinations, cataract surgeries, and the distribution of prescription glasses and medications. According to Dr. Souleimane Cheikh Hamdi, Acting Director of Programs and Projects at Qatar Charity’s Mauritania branch, the campaign is expected to conduct approximately 2,500 medical consultations. The surgical team plans to perform 250 cataract operations and distribute 250 pairs of glasses and corresponding medical prescriptions to qualifying patients.
Dr. Souleymane Ahmed Deida, coordinator of the National Program for Blindness Control, expressed appreciation for the support extended by Qatar Charity and the Qatari people. He highlighted the critical need for such interventions in the targeted areas and encouraged residents to participate promptly in the screenings to facilitate timely treatment and surgery.
The initiative is structured in two phases, according to Dr. Hamahoullah Sid’Elemine, Director of El Chourouk Clinic, which is responsible for carrying out the convoy's activities. The initial phase, focusing on screenings and consultations, took place from August 22 to 28. The second phase, aimed at performing surgeries and conducting medical follow-ups, is planned from October 22 to 27.
Community members have expressed positive feedback regarding the convoy’s impact. Beneficiary Edoumha El Cheikh Siden praised the provision of vital medical services directly to interior regions, noting that previously, residents had to travel to the capital to access treatment. Similarly, Mrohamed Salem El Abass conveyed relief and gratitude, acknowledging the convoy’s role in addressing his urgent need for eye care.
Through this initiative, Qatar Charity and its partners seek to improve vision health among vulnerable populations in Mauritania, reducing barriers to care and enhancing quality of life in remote communities.
