Qatar Charity has initiated a specialized eye surgery medical convoy in Mauritania as part of its global health outreach efforts targeting underserved populations. The campaign, supported by Qatari donors and conducted in collaboration with Mauritania’s National Program for Blindness Control, aims to deliver comprehensive eye care services, including examinations, cataract surgeries, and the distribution of prescription glasses and medications.

The convoy is focused on reaching vulnerable communities in the Moudjeria, El Ghaire, and Legrane areas. According to Dr. Souleimane Cheikh Hamdi, Acting Director of Programs and Projects at Qatar Charity’s Mauritania branch, the initiative plans to provide 2,500 medical consultations, carry out 250 cataract operations, distribute 250 pairs of prescription glasses, and issue 250 medical prescriptions to eligible patients.

Dr. Souleymane Ahmed Deida, coordinator of the National Program for Blindness Control, expressed appreciation for the support from Qatar and Qatar Charity, highlighting the urgent need for ocular health services in the targeted regions. He encouraged local residents to participate fully in the convoy’s activities, stressing the importance of early screening and consultation in facilitating timely treatment and surgical care.

The operation is organized in two phases. The first phase, which involved patient consultations and screenings, was completed from August 22 to August 28. The second phase, focusing on surgical procedures and follow-up medical care, is scheduled for October 22 to 27. Dr. Hamahoullah Sid’Elemine, Director of El Chourouk Clinic—responsible for carrying out the convoy’s operations—emphasized that the campaign follows a coordinated plan between his clinic and Qatar Charity to ensure effective delivery of services.

Residents who have benefited from the first phase expressed gratitude for the outreach. Edoumha El Cheikh Siden praised the effort to bring essential medical care to interior regions of Mauritania, noting that prior to this initiative, patients often had to travel to the capital for treatment. Similarly, Mrohamed Salem El Abass conveyed relief and appreciation, stating that the eye treatment he urgently required has now commenced thanks to the convoy. He extended thanks to those who facilitated the project, underscoring the positive impact it has had on the local communities.
