Qatar Charity (QC) has continued its efforts to support Rohingya refugees living on Bhasan Char island in Bangladesh by distributing cooking gas cylinders to improve daily living conditions. The latest distribution reached about 4,810 refugees, providing them with safer and more efficient cooking fuel alternatives to traditional firewood and other methods.
The initiative aims to address a critical need among refugee households, many of which face challenges in accessing reliable cooking fuel. By supplying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), Qatar Charity seeks to promote safer cooking practices, enhance health outcomes, reduce environmental degradation caused by firewood collection, and alleviate the daily burdens faced by vulnerable families.
Refugees on Bhasan Char have welcomed the assistance. Mabila Khatun, a mother residing on the island, described the difference the support has made: prior to receiving the gas cylinders, cooking was difficult due to fuel shortages. She noted that the LPG distribution has made meal preparation easier, safer, and more convenient for her family. Similarly, Abdul Matlab, a 42-year-old refugee, expressed relief at having access to cooking gas, emphasizing its positive impact on the speed and comfort of daily cooking routines.
Local officials have also acknowledged the value of Qatar Charity’s contributions. Mohammed Roney Alam Noor, Camp-in-Charge on Bhasan Char, commended the organization for conducting a well-organized and transparent distribution process. He highlighted that the support was provided based on fair, needs-based criteria and credited the initiative with significantly improving the quality of life for Rohingya families on the island.
Qatar Charity’s ongoing cooking gas support to Rohingya refugees has spanned more than three years and has benefited approximately 200,000 people to date, underscoring the group’s sustained commitment to humanitarian relief efforts in Bangladesh.
