The Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) has initiated a month-long campaign aimed at raising public awareness about blood cancers and emphasizing the critical role of early detection in improving treatment outcomes. The initiative highlights key information about the main types of blood cancers—including leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma—their symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic procedures, and recent advancements in treatment.

Dr. Hadi Mohammed Abu Rasheed, director of programmes at QCS, explained that leukaemia is among the most prevalent blood cancers in Qatar, particularly affecting males, and ranks among the leading cancers overall. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma also occurs relatively frequently in both men and women, whereas Hodgkin lymphoma tends to be more common in younger adults. Multiple myeloma, while less common, is primarily seen in older adults, especially men.

The campaign draws attention to symptoms that may warrant medical evaluation, such as persistent fatigue, recurrent infections, unexplained weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, easy bruising or bleeding, and ongoing bone pain. Although these signs can be related to other health issues, Dr. Abu Rasheed stressed that persistent or worsening symptoms should prompt individuals to seek professional healthcare advice.

Risk factors identified for blood cancers include advancing age, genetic predisposition, prior cancer treatments, exposure to high levels of radiation or certain chemicals like benzene, weakened immunity, viral infections, and some autoimmune diseases. Diagnosing blood cancer involves a range of tests such as blood work, bone marrow biopsies, imaging, and specialized laboratory evaluations, to accurately determine cancer type and guide treatment planning.

Treatment options have evolved substantially in recent years, now encompassing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation. These advances have contributed to improved survival rates and better quality of life for patients.

Dr. Abu Rasheed emphasized that raising awareness is a fundamental aspect of cancer control efforts. Early recognition of warning signs and prompt medical intervention can lead to earlier diagnosis, more timely treatment, and enhanced patient outcomes. He encouraged community members to maintain healthy lifestyles through balanced diets, regular physical activity, tobacco avoidance, and minimizing exposure to harmful substances. Additionally, he advised people to remain vigilant about unusual or persistent symptoms and seek professional guidance as needed.

The Qatar Cancer Society reaffirmed its commitment to providing reliable, evidence-based information to support cancer prevention, encourage early detection, and enhance the support system for patients, survivors, and their families. The campaign serves as part of these ongoing efforts, aiming to empower the public with knowledge to combat blood cancers effectively.
