The Qatar International Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) at Qatar Chamber recently hosted a specialized seminar on the annulment of arbitral awards in Egypt and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The event, held in Cairo in collaboration with the law firm Kosheri, Rashed & Riad (KRR), was part of the Egypt Arbitration Days 2026 conference.
The seminar attracted an array of professionals from the arbitration and dispute resolution field, including judges, arbitrators, lawyers, academics, and legal experts from across the region. It aimed to foster dialogue and knowledge exchange on the procedural and substantive aspects of setting aside arbitral awards under Egyptian and GCC laws.
Ebrahim Shahbeck, Secretary-General of QICCA, highlighted the Centre’s commitment to organizing and engaging in events that enhance expertise and communication among arbitration practitioners in Qatar and the broader Arab world. In his opening remarks, he noted that such gatherings serve as important platforms for discussing recent legal developments, sharing experience, and examining legislative and judicial practices related to arbitration and alternative dispute resolution methods.
The seminar featured two sessions that delved into critical legal topics, including the scope and procedures governing annulment claims under Egyptian legislation, as well as comparable frameworks in GCC countries. Participants discussed both theoretical and practical dimensions of annulment proceedings, with particular attention paid to the interplay between arbitral rulings and judicial oversight.
A focal point of the discussions was the comparative analysis of legislative and judicial approaches in Egypt and the GCC states. Attendees exchanged views on how differing legal traditions influence the enforcement and annulment of arbitral awards. The conversations underscored the value of leveraging cross-jurisdictional legal experiences to advance arbitration practices and build confidence in arbitration as a reliable dispute resolution mechanism, especially in commercial and investment contexts.
QICCA’s involvement in Egypt Arbitration Days 2026 aligns with its broader objective to enhance cooperation with regional and international arbitration institutions. The Centre aims to facilitate the exchange of expertise among legal practitioners and promote awareness and use of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution processes throughout the Arab region.
