Qatar Museums (QM) has unveiled a new public artwork by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm at Place Vendome. The installation, titled Pink Convertible Big, is part of Wurm’s Fat Car series and features a car sculpture exaggerated to oversized, inflated proportions. Finished in bright pink lacquer, the piece offers a visually striking presence designed to provoke reflection on consumer culture and material excess.

The sculpture transforms a typical symbol of mobility and social status into a distorted, almost bloated form, highlighting society’s preoccupation with consumption and prestige. Constructed from aluminum and coated with vibrant paint, the work acts as a critical commentary on the obesity of consumerism, inviting viewers to rethink their relationship with material goods and sustainability.

Sheikha Reem al-Thani, deputy chief executive for Public Art and Rubaiya Qatar at ALRIWAQ, emphasized the goal of engaging the public through meaningful art. She remarked that positioning Pink Convertible Big in a prominent urban setting serves to turn a familiar status symbol into an experience that questions contemporary culture and consumer excess.

By situating the sculpture in a busy, accessible location, Qatar Museums aims to foster dialogue and make world-class contemporary art a part of everyday life. Pink Convertible Big is intended to reach a wide audience, encouraging critical reflection on the implications of overconsumption and the sustainability challenges associated with modern material lifestyles.
