Qatar News Agency (QNA) inaugurated a four-day training course on advanced journalistic editing skills on Sunday, as part of its 2026 training program organized by the QNA Training Center. The course is attended by agency employees as well as staff members from various government entities.

Designed to enhance participants’ proficiency in preparing news stories and reports, the training emphasizes adherence to professional standards aimed at elevating the quality of media content and editorial output across media and government institutions.

Led by Dr. Nabil al-Mariri, a training adviser at QNA, the program focuses on the fundamental concepts of news and news values, exploring their connection to editorial policy, sourcing, and the evaluation processes involved in editorial decision-making. Participants are guided through the stages of news story development, with particular attention to the editor’s role in crafting journalistic content.

The curriculum covers the structural elements of news writing, including how to formulate headlines, leads, and body text. It also highlights the importance of context and background information in supporting news stories, alongside an examination of journalistic formats and the criteria for selecting appropriate formats based on content type and audience.

Specialized sessions address the distinctions between news stories and reports, detailing the objectives and construction methods of various news report types. The course further explores language, style, text quality, and key characteristics of journalistic writing, with the goal of improving editorial craftsmanship according to established standards.

This initiative reflects QNA’s broader commitment, through its Training Center, to develop national media capabilities, advance professional skills in journalistic editing, and align with the evolving demands of contemporary media work, ultimately contributing to improved journalistic quality in Qatar.
