Dr. Hamdi Mbarek, director of Research and Data Analytics at the Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI), a member of Qatar Foundation, has been appointed to the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General’s Science Council. The council comprises 21 internationally recognised scientists and experts who advise the WHO chief on high-level scientific matters, with a focus on emerging scientific and technological developments that could shape the future of global public health.
Dr. Mbarek’s selection reflects his extensive scientific background and international contributions in the fields of human genomics, population genetics, precision health, and large-scale health data science. At QPHI, he leads the Research and Data Analytics Directorate, which is responsible for large-scale genomic discovery and analysis, creation of population-specific genomic resources, facilitation of national and international research collaborations, and the translation of genomic and health data into actionable knowledge to advance precision health initiatives.
The appointment also underscores the increasing prominence of Qatar's scientific research capabilities on the global stage. Dr. Mbarek expressed his honour in joining the WHO Science Council and highlighted his commitment to applying his expertise in genomics, precision health, and population diversity to contribute to the council’s work in advancing science for the benefit of global populations.
