The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will team up with Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) to present "Brahms Reimagined," a concert taking place on October 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Katara Opera House. The event aims to offer audiences a fresh interpretation of several works by the 19th-century composer Johannes Brahms.

Under the baton of Wilson Ng, newly appointed Fellow Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the program will showcase Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major. The soloist for the evening is Esther Yoo, an internationally recognized violinist and the youngest ever laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. Yoo’s performance is expected to highlight the concerto’s lyrical and technical demands.

The second half of the concert features a distinctive reimagining of Brahms’ music through Arnold Schoenberg’s orchestral adaptation of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G Minor. This work transforms the original chamber composition into a larger orchestral format, offering a modernist perspective on Brahms’ Romantic-era material.

This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of QPO and GU-Q to cultural diplomacy and international dialogue. The orchestra uses music to promote cross-cultural understanding, while Georgetown University in Qatar, established in partnership with Qatar Foundation in 2005, fosters global leadership through education, research, and public engagement.

Founded in 1789 in Washington, D.C., Georgetown University is a leading academic institution emphasizing intellectual and cultural exchange. GU-Q continues this mission in Qatar, offering programs such as the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service with a focus on Arts, Heritage, and Cultural Diplomacy, along with an Artist-in-Residence series.

Kurt Meister, QPO’s executive director, described the event as a prime example of how the arts can bridge cultures and disciplines. He highlighted the concert’s role in celebrating both artistic achievement and the capacity of cultural institutions to foster dialogue, understanding, and global citizenship.

"Brahms Reimagined" also reflects the ongoing partnership between QPO and GU-Q in encouraging collaboration across education and the arts. Featuring internationally acclaimed performers and artistic leadership, the event is positioned as a convergence of musical excellence and cultural exchange, inviting audiences to explore well-known compositions through innovative interpretations.
