Qatar Charity has launched a relief effort valued at QR670,000 to assist families affected by recent flooding in The Gambia. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency and local authorities, targeted approximately 1,200 families in some of the hardest-hit areas of the country.

The project provided comprehensive support including food aid, non-food items, and construction materials to facilitate recovery and rehabilitation. Specifically, 1,200 food baskets containing essential staples were distributed to strengthen food security for the affected households. Alongside this, 1,200 blankets were delivered to improve shelter conditions and provide comfort amid ongoing humanitarian challenges following the floods.

In addition to meeting immediate needs, the intervention supplied construction and shelter materials to households whose homes were damaged or destroyed, enabling families to initiate repairs and restore safer living conditions. Assistance was also prioritized for vulnerable groups, such as families caring for orphans, ensuring they received the necessary resources to rebuild.

Mahmoud Shaker, director of Qatar Charity’s office in The Gambia, emphasized the organisation’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian support in the region. He noted that coordination between charitable organisations, government agencies, and local communities was crucial to ensuring aid reached the most vulnerable and created lasting positive outcomes.

Local officials acknowledged the timing and impact of the relief effort, highlighting that many families faced severe humanitarian difficulties due to the flooding. The governor of the Central River Region praised Qatar Charity’s role, underscoring the direct effect the project had on restoring hope and stability for households that had lost homes and livelihoods. Likewise, the governor of the Lower River Region commended the organisation’s swift response, noting that it offered families a tangible opportunity to rebuild their lives.

The executive director of the National Disaster Management Agency expressed gratitude for Qatar Charity’s partnership in the government’s flood response efforts. He stated that the project helped uphold the dignity of affected families, supported their recovery process, and contributed to their ability to pursue a more secure and sustainable future.

This latest initiative underscores the continued focus of Qatar Charity and its partners on mitigating the impacts of natural disasters and supporting vulnerable communities in The Gambia through coordinated humanitarian action.
