Qualcomm has unveiled its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipsets for Android smartphones, designed to enhance on-device artificial intelligence processing amid rising memory costs and a contracting global smartphone market. The new processors, manufactured using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s 2-nanometer technology, are aimed at premium devices from manufacturers including Motorola, Xiaomi, and ZTE.
The announcement, made at a virtual event on Tuesday, introduced two versions of the chipset, one featuring additional capabilities labeled as "extreme." Qualcomm is positioning these chips as central components of what it calls an "AI hub," enabling smartphones to run complex AI models and generate AI-driven outputs locally without dependence on cloud computing. This approach aligns with industry trends, as competitors like Apple highlight on-device AI processing to make smartphones more intelligent and autonomous.
The smartphone market is facing challenges due to soaring memory prices, which have increased manufacturing costs and led to forecasts of a 14% shrinkage in unit shipments in 2026, with a potential further 1% decline in 2027, according to Counterpoint Research. As a result, manufacturers are emphasizing higher-end devices aimed at consumers willing to pay a premium, with Qualcomm’s new chips playing a key role in this strategy.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 integrates a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and a neural processing unit (NPU) to handle AI workloads efficiently. The NPU supports continuous background AI agents, which Qualcomm describes as a shift toward “agentic-centric” computing models that assist users by completing tasks rather than merely navigating applications. The company has also incorporated enhanced security features to manage AI agents' access to sensitive user data.
At the launch, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon referenced Google’s Gemini AI project, highlighting how the chip’s processing capabilities and sensor integration allow AI to understand a user’s context, such as detecting if they are in a vehicle. Qualcomm stated that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is capable of running AI models with up to 30 billion parameters, underscoring its advanced performance.
Amon emphasized that future AI-enabled devices will extend beyond simple command execution toward more proactive task completion, signaling a significant evolution in smartphone functionality.
