Quebec City-born Jerome LeBlanc has spent the last 17 years bringing to life the iconic character of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell from the film Top Gun, crafting a portrayal of Tom Cruise that many find strikingly authentic. Now 38 years old, LeBlanc has built a career around this persona, which he describes as an "interpreter" rather than a direct impersonator, blending illusion with nostalgia to evoke the 1980s era that made the movie a cultural touchstone.

LeBlanc’s work primarily involves more than 200 appearances annually at promotional events across Southern California, including venues like Kansas City Barbecue, a filming location for Top Gun scenes, and the decommissioned U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, where he routinely poses for photos with visitors. His partnership with Brian Ernst, who portrays Val Kilmer’s character Iceman, extends the Top Gun experience for audiences, with the pair often appearing together.

Despite the similarities in build and demeanor, LeBlanc’s resemblance to Cruise becomes particularly evident when he adopts the full Maverick look—donning vintage flight suits or leather jackets adorned with colorful patches, tightly fitted white T-shirts, and the signature aviator sunglasses. He even replicates Cruise’s characteristic grin and laugh, attributes that have endeared him to fans who often line up for photo opportunities and interactions.

LeBlanc credits his Montreal-area orthodontist and supportive mother for transforming his smile, which he considers a cornerstone of his Maverick persona. Before braces, he felt less recognized for his resemblance to Cruise, but afterward, the similarities were frequently remarked upon, boosting his confidence to pursue acting. Initially studying architecture, LeBlanc transferred to UCLA and transitioned towards theater training at institutions such as The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, The Groundlings Theatre & School, and the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

His move from architecture to street performing as Maverick came partly due to work restrictions tied to his student visa. Performing on tourist-heavy streets gave him the opportunity to refine his acting skills while earning tips, eventually launching his professional career as a Top Gun interpreter.

LeBlanc also found personal connections through his work. He met his wife, Nicole—a native of New Jersey—while performing on Hollywood Boulevard. The couple has three young children, with a daughter expected in September.

Though LeBlanc was raised in Quebec and retains ties to Canada, he has lived in California for over five years and describes himself as both connected to his Canadian roots and deeply integrated into life in the United States.
