Queen drummer Roger Taylor has indicated that the band may explore virtual reunion shows featuring a hologram of their late lead singer, Freddie Mercury. Taylor, 77, and guitarist Brian May, 79, initially suggested the possibility of using avatars to bring the group back together last year. Speaking again on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, Taylor noted that he and May, who live near each other, have discussed the idea and see potential in leveraging current technology.

Taylor specifically referred to the London-based Abba Voyage show, which employs advanced virtual avatars to recreate live performances, as an example of how digital technology has rapidly progressed. Abba Voyage has been running since May 2022 at a purpose-built arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, where life-like avatars of the original band members perform alongside a live 10-piece band.

May previously commented on the concept in November, emphasizing that although Mercury passed away in 1991, his presence remains strong through Queen’s music. May also mentioned retired bassist John Deacon, suggesting that like Mercury, his influence persists through the band’s legacy. He highlighted immersive experiences such as The Sphere in Las Vegas as examples of how fans might soon be able to experience performances that closely replicate the original Queen lineup of Mercury, Deacon, May, and Taylor.

The idea of a hologram or avatar-based Queen show would follow emerging trends in live entertainment where technology is used to recreate or extend the presence of iconic performers. However, no formal plans have been announced regarding dates or locations should such a project move forward. The band’s discussions reflect both a desire to honor Mercury and Deacon’s contributions and to embrace new ways of connecting with audiences.
