A Queens community group called for the permanent closure of a brothel operating on Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights after it reportedly reopened just hours following an NYPD raid. The protest took place Sunday outside the 75th Street establishment, which formerly housed a pediatric dentist’s office but has since been converted into a sex shop known locally as part of the so-called “Market of Sweethearts.”
Members of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition voiced frustration with city and state officials, criticizing their handling of the area, which has seen an influx of illegal migrant activity and ongoing law enforcement challenges. The group argued that the brothel’s reopening exemplifies growing lawlessness along the busy commercial strip.
“We’re demanding that they shut it down permanently,” said Hiram Monserrate, a city district leader, during the demonstration. Monserrate condemned the criminal justice system’s response as inadequate and accused officials of failing residents by allowing illicit operations to persist.
According to protesters, the NYPD conducted a raid on the building on Saturday, but the illegal business resumed operations within hours. Demonstrators rallied with chants such as “shut it down” and “taking our streets back,” emphasizing their desire to reclaim community safety and order.
The incident adds to a series of disputes over enforcement and regulatory efforts in the neighborhood, which has become a focal point for discussions on public safety, immigration, and urban governance. Authorities have not issued immediate comment on the recent raid or the brothel’s reopening.
