Authorities have identified the body found floating in a pond at Bowne Park in Queens as Qinmei Lin, a 73-year-old woman with dementia who had been reported missing earlier Sunday. Lin was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in the kettle pond shortly after 6 p.m. by a bystander who alerted emergency services.
According to police, Lin was last seen leaving her home in the Flushing neighborhood at approximately 3:20 a.m., about half a mile from Bowne Park. Emergency responders recovered Lin’s body from the water and placed her on the grass near the scene, where onlookers gathered.
Officials have confirmed that the woman had wandered away from her residence, prompting a search that culminated in the discovery of her in the park. The exact cause of death remains pending further examination by the city medical examiner’s office.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while underscoring the challenges of supervising individuals with dementia who may unknowingly put themselves at risk.
