Former Perth-based racehorse Cosmic Crusader made a strong debut in Victoria by capturing the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield on July 25. The five-year-old gelding, trained by Andrea Leek and ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, won the 1,200-meter race by 2½ lengths, earning a first stakes victory for his new stable.

Cosmic Crusader entered the race as a $12 chance and delivered a commanding performance, finishing ahead of Nicky Ryan-trained Winnasedge, ridden by Luke Currie, who placed second. Ciaron Maher’s Recommendation, with Thomas Stockdale aboard, came in third, 1½ lengths behind Winnasedge.

This marked Cosmic Crusader’s first appearance since December 13, when he finished second in the Group 3 Gold Rush over 1,400 meters at Ascot under former trainer Michael Grantham. Prior to that, the horse had secured a Group 1 victory in the Northerly Stakes over 1,800 meters at Ascot on December 6.

Leek expressed gratitude to owner Bob Peters for transferring Cosmic Crusader to her Pakenham stable and trusted her to manage the horse’s campaign. She credited Tom Ahern for a wind procedure performed during the horse’s spell, which appeared to have a positive effect on performance. Leek praised Stackhouse’s tactical ride, noting that he positioned Cosmic Crusader well before making a winning move.

Looking ahead, Leek said discussions with Peters would determine the horse’s upcoming targets, with the Group 2 P B Lawrence Stakes on August 15 and the Group 1 Memsie Stakes on August 29, both at Caulfield, likely options.

Jockey Daniel Stackhouse described Cosmic Crusader as a "beautiful" but "quirky" horse, noting his tendency to become unsettled before races. He said the horse settled well once positioned behind the gates and praised his quick acceleration when urged during the race. Stackhouse also indicated that Cosmic Crusader is capable of competing in more prestigious races in the future, adding that the Bletchingly Stakes was a valuable win for the team.
