Raaheeb is set to maintain his unbeaten record as he competes in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday. Trained by Owen Burrows, the colt has impressed in his early career, winning his debut at Ascot as a two-year-old and following up with a smooth victory in the bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown in April.
Raaheeb was initially aimed at the Betfred Derby at Epsom but missed the race after returning slightly stiff from his training session at Esher. Despite this setback, Burrows confirmed the colt is in good shape ahead of his first Group One challenge. “The Curragh will suit Raaheeb as it’s a stayers’ track,” Burrows said. He added that the preparation had been steady following a cautious approach after Sandown, noting an ideal racing surface would include some rainfall and “nice, good ground.”
The Irish Derby presents a strong challenge, with several notable contenders in the field. Among those competing is Benvenuto Cellini, who was controversially withdrawn from the Epsom Derby, along with Christmas Day, the victor of that race. James J Braddock, who finished third at Epsom, also lines up, adding to the competitive nature of the contest.
Leading trainer Aidan O’Brien is set to run four horses, including Benvenuto Cellini, Christmas Day, Pierre Bonnard, and Action. Richard Hannon’s entries Bunyola Bay and Shaihaan, ridden by Donnacha O’Brien, complete the lineup for the prestigious event.
Sunday’s race at the Curragh offers a defining moment for Raaheeb, who will face a demanding field in what could be a key step in his pursuit of Classic success.
