Rachel Riley, the Channel 4 Countdown presenter, is currently balancing the demands of her television career with family life amid a busy summer schedule. The 40-year-old, known for her role as the show’s resident maths expert, is managing parenting duties alongside her husband, dancer Pasha Kovalev, who is preparing to embark on a tour with former Strictly Come Dancing professionals.
Riley and Kovalev, 46, married in 2019 after meeting on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013. They have two daughters, Maven, six, and Noa, four. Kovalev is set to join The Legends In Vegas: After Hours tour, a production featuring former Strictly dancers Brendan Cole, James Jordan, Vincent Simone and Ian Waite. Riley acknowledged that coordinating family time is a continual challenge as work commitments for both increase.
“I think the secret is not to worry about being perfect,” Riley said, noting that children’s happiness takes precedence over parental presence at all times. She described recent family activities including theatre outings and visits to local attractions, which provide rare moments of calm amidst busy schedules.
The couple is planning a family holiday this summer to ensure uninterrupted time together, including a cruise where Kovalev will accompany Riley as her guest while she continues working. With Noa soon starting school, Riley expressed excitement about her daughter’s developing love of learning.
Despite Riley’s strong association with mathematics—holding an applied maths degree from Oxford University and succeeding Carol Vorderman on Countdown—she emphasized that her children are under no pressure to pursue similar academic interests. “Research shows that kids are better with maths if they’re confident with it,” she said, adding that her eldest daughter aspires to be an Olympic gymnast or maths teacher.
Riley noted that her children view her television presence as normal, though their friends find it more noteworthy. They especially enjoy seeing Kovalev perform live.
The couple will not watch the next series of Strictly Come Dancing as a family, as Kovalev’s tour will coincide with the show’s September return, which will feature three new hosts: Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe, and Johannes Radebe.
Reflecting on her 17 years on Countdown, during which she has worked alongside several presenters including Jeff Stelling and Nick Hewer, Riley said the role has been a steady and rewarding part of her career. Although she had no prior TV experience before joining Countdown at 22, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity and the supportive environment of the show.
In addition to her television work, Riley is currently fronting a safety campaign with Energizer aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of coin batteries to young children. “Coin batteries are a really serious hazard for young children,” Riley stated. “If a child swallows a coin battery, it’s a 999 emergency. It’s a critical issue that needs to be addressed before tragedies occur.”
